ABOUT 40,000 lightning strikes lit the sky until the early hours yesterday in an awesome display of nature's power.
The violent storms left about 8000 Hunter residents without power and affected pay TV and some telephone services.
EnergyAustralia and Country Energy spokeswomen said 7000 of the 8000 blacked out customers on Thursday night were in the Upper Hunter.
Electricity strikes had knocked out substations at Martins Creek, Gresford, Broadmeadow and Kooragang Island.
